ABOUT 'STILL, STILL, STILL'

Music: Traditional German carol
Text: David Warner
Arrangement: Mack Wilberg

“Still, Still, Still” is a 19th-century Austrian Christmas carol on the Nativity, set to a folk tune from Salzburg. It uses a traditional song form in which the opening phrases are repeated at the end of each verse, emphasizing the serenity of the scene and the gentle peace of the carol’s message. There have been numerous English translations and adaptations of the lyrics, all focusing on the sleeping Christ child in the manger. With new lyrics by David Warner, a longtime friend and collaborator of Mack Wilberg’s, this arrangement of “Still, Still, Still” sees beyond the smiles and sighs of the baby asleep in Mary’s arms to the wonder and promise of Christ, the Savior.
